Audiology
Audiology is the discipline concerned with assessment and treatment of hearing and balance disorders. Our specialties include:
- Hearing Assessment
- Hearing aid fitting and rehabilitation; hearing aid repair service
- Hearing therapy; tinnitus assessment, intervention and rehabilitation
- Vestibular/balance assessment, intervention and rehabilitation
- Paediatric services
- Cochlear Implant/BAHA Adults and Children
The department offers a satellite clinic in Barry at West Quay Medical Centre.
All patients are encouraged to have a reassessment of their hearing three years after the initial fitting of their hearing aid. If they feel that their hearing is worse at any time within this time period, they may also phone the department to make an appointment. If the patient feels that they would like a second hearing aid or would like to see a hearing therapist, please phone the department for an appointment (details below).
At each appointment, every patient will be asked for consent to have any procedures performed and also consent to have their representative / relative / friend / significant other present during the appointment.
Audiology Appointments
Our clinics have the following open access times:
West Quay Medical Centre, Hood Rd, Barry
All appointments for hearing aid fittings, hearing tests, hearing therapy and reassessments are booked and must be made through out booking line at the University Hospital of Wales.
From 13 March 2017, all of our repair sessions are on a walk-in basis on a Monday or Thursday only from 09:00 to 12:00 noon and 13:30 to 16:00.
Hearing aid repairs
Our clinics have the following open access times for hearing aid repairs. Please come and sit in the audiology waiting area and the technician will call patients in the order that they have arrived.
All of our repair sessions are on a walk-in basis on a Monday or Thursday only from 9.00 am to 12.00 noon and 1.30 pm to 4.00 pm.

A lost aid charge of £65.00 may be incurred if the hearing aid has been damaged through misuse or if lost. If you are to be charged for a lost hearing aid and you would like this replaced at West Quay Medical Centre then a cheque should be made out to the Audiology Department before the hearing aid will be re-issued.
Postal Services
If the patient is unable to attend the clinic for any reason or cannot wait for a repair appointment then a postal service is available. Please enclose the hearing aid and a brief description of the problem, along with the hearing aid. It will be serviced the day it is received and sent back to the patient's home address by second class post.

Batteries
All batteries are provided free of charge on a yearly basis.
The patient or a representative can visit Outpatients Clinic 9, UHW, during our opening hours to collect batteries. Patients can also phone our main centre to request batteries to be posted to them.
